About the event
Centering Prayer matters — it’s more than just a comforting practice we do in order to feel better about our relationship with God. Thomas Keating taught that the faithful practice of Centering Prayer leads to deep healing in our hearts and souls, thanks to the presence and action of the Spirit within us. It’s helpful to remember this promise of Centering Prayer (and contemplative spirituality in general) especially as we seek to navigate what it means to consent to the action of the Spirit during difficult or challenging times.
Dare we believe that the promise of Centering Prayer is not only for inner healing, but to contribute to the healing of our families, communities, and even society as a whole?
During this retreat day we will explore why and how it makes sense to answer that question with a confident “Yes”!
Drawing on the wisdom of Thomas Keating, Cynthia Bourgeault, and the great mystics of our tradition, our time together will be an invitation to taste the healing grace of silence and silent prayer: to remind ourselves how the Spirit we consent to in the practice of Centering Prayer loves us and desires not only to transform our hearts, but to bring healing to our world as well.
This retreat day will include time for Centering Prayer, personal reflection, talks by our presenter, and opportunities for shared reflection and contemplative dialogue. A box lunch, coffee, tea and water will be provided.
Our presenter, Carl McColman, is a contemplative author and spiritual teacher based here in Atlanta. His books include The New Big Book of Christian Mysticism, Eternal Heart and An Invitation to Celtic Wisdom. A long-time practitioner of Centering Prayer, Carl has been commissioned to lead Introductory Centering Prayer workshops and has led numerous retreats for Contemplative Outreach of Atlanta and other Contemplative Outreach chapters.
