SUMMARY:Online Event: 12 Principles for Living a Mystical Life\, January 31\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Let’s Talk About Mysticism — Free Zoom Call with Carl McColman!\n\n\nDear friends\,\nI’m inviting you to join me (Carl McColman) for a free Zoom call on the topic of: \nPractical Mysticism\n12 Principles for Living a Mystical Life\nI’m offering two opportunities to explore this topic with me: on Wednesday\, January 28 and Saturday\, January 31. I hope I’ll see you at one of these calls! \nSign up for the Zoom call on January 28 (Wednesday\, 7 PM EST): To register\, click here \nSign up for the Zoom call on January 31 (Saturday\, 12 Noon EST): To register\, click here \nNote: both calls are live\, featuring the same presentation both times. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTwelve Practical Principles for Living a Mystical Life — Starting Today!\nIs mysticism the future of spirituality? Most mystics would say yes\, but theologians and other spiritual thought-leaders would also agree. But how we embrace a truly mystical life? What steps can we take to open our hearts\, our minds\, our lives\, to a deeply visionary\, profoundly loving\, endlessly compassionate way of being? These are the kinds of questions I want to explore with you at one of these upcoming Zoom calls. \nThese free Zoom presentations are open to the public: you do not have to be a paid subscriber (or a subscriber at all) to sign up. \n\nIf you don’t know me\, I am the author of books like The New Big Book of Christian Mysticism\, Read the Bible Like a Mystic\, and Eternal Heart. For over 40 years now\, I have been passionately interested in both Christian and world mysticism\, finding in these wisdom traditions doorways into deep personal spiritual exploration. In this program\, I’ll invite us to dive deep into a question that so many spiritual seekers ponder: How can I live a truly mystical life? My answer might surprise you — but I believe my approach will certainly inspire you. \nOur time together on Zoom will include my informal\, retreat-like presentation\, along with plenty of time for questions and answers. If you’d like to begin with an optional period of Centering Prayer\, you can log in early to join in for a deep dive into contemplative silence. Or just log in at the scheduled time to enjoy the presentation and the conversation. \nI’ll be offering this Zoom call twice in January 2026 (same presentation both times): \n\nWednesday\, January 28\, 2026\, at 7:30 PM Eastern USA Time • To register\, click here\nOptional Centering Prayer period at 7 PM; Presentation begins at 7:30 PM EST.\nSaturday\, January 31\, 2026\, at 12:30 PM Eastern USA Time • To register\, click here\nOptional Centering Prayer period at 12 Noon; Presentation begins at 12:30 PM EST.\n\nThere is no charge to attend this webinar\, but registration is required. Sign up now\, and we’ll see you soon!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHere’s the fine print: these Zoom calls are open to the public and are free of charge. After the presentation\, I’ll offer a brief and no-pressure invitation for you to become either a paid Substack subscriber or a paid member of my Patreon circle. Either option will give you access to over 20 more Zoom calls this year as we explore the topic of “Living a Mystical Life” through meditation\, conversation\, shared reflection\, and discussion on two books concerning the mystical life: The New Big Book of Christian Mysticism and The Essential Writings of Christian Mysticism (edited by B. McGinn). \nA Patreon membership is the best deal: not only does it give you access to all my upcoming Zoom calls\, but you’ll also get recordings of all the calls you missed\, along with access to other content I’ve created over the years\, including meditations (both audio/video and written)\, study guides for several mystical classics\, poetry and more. As an added bonus\, Patreon members will also get complimentary paid subscriptions to both of my Substack newsletters — a $12/month value in itself. \nBut there’s no obligation to attend either or both of these Zoom calls — so if you’re interested in the mystical life\, I look forward to seeing you there! \nThere is no charge to attend this webinar\, but registration is required.\nSign up now\, and we’ll see you soon!

SUMMARY:Online Event: Centering Prayer Summit\, January 24-25\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Friends\, I’ll be one of the featured speakers at the 2026 Centering Prayer Summit\, taking place on January 24-25\, 2026. Click here to register. \nOther speakers include Cynthia Bourgeault\, Kaira Jewel Lingo\, Adam Bucko\, and more. \nThe theme of this event is “Learning to See in the Dark: Opening to Mystical Hope in a Collective Dark Night.” I think pretty much everyone agrees that we are living in times that are challenging: politically\, economically\, technologically\, and yes\, spiritually. But the mystical traditions of Christianity and the other sacred paths of the world offer us powerful and practical wisdom for navigating times like ours. This weekend even features a variety of voices and perspectives as we all ponder this question: how do I learn to see — to pray\, to be — in the dark\, even when it feels like a “dark night”? \n \nMy talk\, building off of the Summit’s main theme is “Entering the Cloud of Unknowing: Befriending the Darkness in Centering Prayer.” And while my talk (and the Summit) is focussed on the practice of Centering Prayer\, I believe the themes\, values and practical wisdom that we will be sharing at this Summit will be helpful for all spiritual seekers\, regardless of which method(s) of contemplative practice you prefer. \nAll the events will be recorded\, so you can count on being able to enjoy the teachings from this Summit even if you are unable to attend in person. Any one of the programs offered at this Summit is worth the entire price of admission — it’s like you’ll be getting eight amazing deep dives into the contemplative wisdom of our time\, for the price of one! \nEarly bird pricing is available only until December 31\, so register now! Click here: https://www.centeringprayersummit.com/referral/CPS2026/3cjCevmHrTHV23Or \nI love these events because they have the feel of a true “gathering of the tribes” as contemplative teachers\, practitioners and seekers from all around the world join together for a shared weekend of prayer\, meditation and reflection. I’m so honored to be part of this — I hope you’ll join in on the wisdom and the fun!

SUMMARY:Spiritual Wanderlust Contemplative Summit (I'm one of 40 speakers!)
DESCRIPTION:I’m honored to share that I’ll be speaking at the 2025 Contemplative Summit — a free online gathering bringing together over 40 wisdom teachers from across contemplative traditions. \nFrom September 25–28\, thousands of us from around the globe will be exploring this year’s theme: \nThe Spacious Heart: Holding Suffering with Love \nWe’ll be joined by amazing guests\, like Parker Palmer\, Jacqui Lewis\, Fr. Greg Boyle\, Kathleen Norris\, and many others. Together\, we’ll ask: \n\n\nHow do we stay tender when the world feels hard? \n\n\nWhere does the contemplative path meet the cry for justice? \n\n\nWhat can forgotten mystics — and even our own shadows — teach us now? \n\n\nHow might we make space in our hearts for joy and grief\, for awe and uncertainty? \n\n\nIn addition to powerful talks\, you’ll be able to join live practice sessions\, daily small groups\, and even explore spiritual direction in a safe\, supportive space. \nIt’s 4 days to breathe\, listen deeply\, and widen your heart — in community with thousands of others seeking to live awake and connected. \nI hope you’ll join us. You can reserve your free spot (paid upgrade options available) by clicking here: \nhttps://school.spiritualwanderlust.org/a/2148152474/nYbfKp4J

SUMMARY:Contemplative Summit (Online Event)\, October 24-27\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:I’m so honored to be one of the presenters of the Spiritual Wanderlust 2024 Contemplative Summit! I’m joining other contemplative writers and teaches like Carmen Acevedo Butcher\, James Finley\, Kaira Jewel Lingo\, James Martin\, Christine Valters Paintner\, and many others\, for four days of conversation and exploration of various topics related to contemplative practice and spiritual living. \nThe event is free\, but you need to pre-register by clicking here: school.spiritualwanderlust.org/a/2147964072/nYbfKp4J. (disclosure: please use this link\, if you decide to purchase one of the optional paid upgrades\, then I will get a commission and wouldn’t that be nice!?!) \nThis year the organizers of the summit asked me to speak about contemplation and psychedelics. I’ve written about this before\, so it’s a topic that I believe is timely and important\, especially as more and more research is being done into the use of psychedelic medicines for the treatment of depression\, anxiety\, PTSD\, and end-of-life care. And of course\, many indigenous cultures continue to use psychoactive plants for ceremonial and sacramental purposes. I know this might be a new topic for many people\, and perhaps even controversial — so please attend the summit and hear what I have to say! \nHere’s the description of the event from the organizers: \n\nThis year’s Summit is an invitation to explore the Mystery that lies beyond certitude and control. As we gather with fellow seekers\, we’ll learn from some of the most profound voices in contemplative spirituality—teachers like James Finley\, Suzanne Stabile\, and Fr. James Martin. We’ll delve into what it means to live fully\, even in the darkest seasons of life. \nIf you’ve ever felt a longing for something deeper\, if you’re searching for wisdom\, healing\, or a greater sense of connection\, this Summit is for you. Together\, we’ll explore: \n\n\nHow can the teachings of the mystics can shape our spiritual growth? \n\n\nWhat do our divine longings teach us?  \n\n\nHow do we navigate the dark seasons of our lives? \n\n\nI hope you’ll join me and thousands of others on this transformative journey. The doors are wide open—are you ready to step through? \n\nClick here to register for the Contemplative Summit!

DESCRIPTION:Click here to register for the Modern Mystics School\, including my August 3\, 2024 program on Caryll Houselander! \nCaryll Houselander was a British mystic who lived from 1901 to 1954. Each month a different instructor will present a Saturday program on a modern-day mystic\, including figures like Howard Thurman\, Thomas Merton\, Simone Weil\, Thich Nhat Hanh\, and many others. DESCRIPTION:The Language of Praise from the Psalms to Mary Oliver (And Beyond)\nAlice Camille\, Paul Boudreau\, and Carl McColman \nThursday\, April 25\, 2024 7:30-9:00 pm Online — Click here to register. \nThe most beloved book in the Old Testament – perhaps even the entire Bible – is the Psalms. This collection of 150 Hebrew hymns formed the spiritual life of ancient Israel – and of Jesus\, along with monks\, nuns\, and mystics of every generation since. Modern-day musicians (U2)\, poets (Mary Oliver)\, and writers (Nan Merrill) have been influenced by this great biblical prayer-book. For this virtual conversation\, join us for an evening celebrating the spirituality of the Psalms and to consider how they continue to influence us. We’ll look at our favorite Psalms\, poems and songs inspired by or based on Psalms\, and maybe imagine what new psalms for the modern era might be needed. \nIf you’ve attended Alice\, Paul and Carl’s previous programs for the Oratory (on Star Trek and pop music)\, you know they combine a deep love for the Bible and the spiritual life with an equal appreciation for pop culture. St. Ignatius encourages us to “find God in all things”. Alice\, Paul and Carl make the search fun!

SUMMARY:Online Course: Lent with the Mystics (Spirituality and Practice)
DESCRIPTION:To learn more about this e-course and to register for it\, click here. \nSpirituality & Practice is one of my favorite online websites/communities\, offering a truly interspiritual approach to cultivating the interior life. I’ve been leading online courses for S&P for several years now\, so imagine how thrilled I was when I was approached to lead their 2024 Lenten program! Naturally\, we decided my theme would be “Lent with the Mystics” and I’d develop the course around how the Lenten themes of fasting\, giving and prayer pair well with the classic mystical process of purification\, illumination\, and deification/union. \nThis course will include a series of emails with quotations from great mystics\, my reflection on their wisdom\, prompts for your own journaling\, meditation and prayer\, and a robust practice circle where you can interact with me and with the other course participants. We’ll also have a Zoom call on March 21 which will be recorded in case you can’t attend in person. Plus\, if you’re a chaplain\, this course counts for six continuing education hours. \nInterested? SUMMARY:Online Event: Dealing with Distractions During Centering Prayer
DESCRIPTION:“I’ve tried Centering Prayer\, but my mind just won’t settle down!” If you’ve ever said this\, or something like it\, then this mini-retreat is for you! We will be reflecting together on how the “monkey mind” feels like such a distraction during forms of silent prayer — and then we’ll consider how we can actually “meet the monkey” in such a way that even the noisiest thoughts can become doorways to moving deeper into prayerful silence before God. We’ll have two sessions to pray together\, learn together\, and support one another on the greatest of adventures — moving more deeply into the silence of Divine Love. \n\nSpecial note: thanks to a generous patron of the Vallombrosa Center who has underwritten some of the costs associated with this retreat\, registration is now only $25 (normally $50) per person! \nTo learn more and to register\, click on this link: Taming the Monkey Mind: Dealing with Distractions During Centering Prayer.

SUMMARY:Online Course: Wisdom of the World's Mystical Traditions (Seven Week Program)
DESCRIPTION:Mysticism is like meditation and prayer — it cannot be limited to just one faith or wisdom tradition. Zeitgeist — Atlanta’s home base for the spiritually independent seeker (and their allies like me\, who are aligned with a faith but who love the interspiritual adventure) — is doing important work not only here in the south\, but now thanks to online technology\, for everyone. I’m really excited to partner with Zeitgeist to offer this seven week program on “Wisdom of the World’s Mystical Traditions.” Each week we will explore one of the great mystical/contemplative traditions\, and engage in a meaningful spiritual exercise designed to explore the contemplative practice of that particular lineage. People at all levels of contemplative study are welcome to participate: all we ask is that you bring an open heart\, a curious mind\, and a willingness to respect all positive spiritual paths. \nTo learn more about this program and to register\, click here:\nwww.zgatl.org/carl-mccolman-mysticism.html

SUMMARY:Online Event: Julian of Norwich - The Patron Saint of Sheltering in Place
DESCRIPTION:Julian of Norwich\, a fourteenth century mystic\, is surprisingly relevant to our time: she lived through political turmoil\, religious conflict\, and multiple outbreaks of the bubonic plague. Through it all\, she retained a spirituality powerful in its optimism\, trust\, and joy in God. She has much to teach us about the nature of Divine Love\, the dynamics of prayer\, and the beauty of life when it is grounded in the unshakable confidence that “All Shall Be Well.” Our sessions will explore who Julian was\, why her message was so radical for its time (and remains visionary even now)\, and how we can apply her joyful wisdom to our lives today. \nThis special online retreat is sponsored by the Vallombrosa Center of Menlo Park\, CA. We will gather via Zoom for two sessions on May 29 and May 30. Click here for more information or to register.

SUMMARY:Online Retreat: Praying with the English Mystics
DESCRIPTION:One of my favorite monasteries is Holy Cross Monastery in the Hudson River Valley of New York. I’ve led a number of retreats there over the years\, and so I’m very pleased to offer this retreat — via Zoom — the next best thing to being there! \nOver three days (May 12\, 13\, and 14\, 2020) we’ll have a Zoom session each day to reflect together on the wisdom of one of the great English mystics. We’ll explore the spiritual guidance from Julian of Norwich\, Evelyn Underhill\, and the anonymous author of The Cloud of Unknowing. Each session will include an introduction to the mystic we are exploring\, highlights from their teachings\, and practical insights how we can incorporate their contemplative into our daily prayer lives\, here in the 21st century. \nWe suggest a donation of $15 per session ($45 for the entire retreat) which will support the ministry of the Holy Cross monks (and my ministry as well). To make your donation\, click on the link below; please put “English mystics retreat” in the memo line of your donation. No one will be required to donate in order to join the sessions. \nMake your donation at www.holycrossmonastery.com/donate (remember to put “English Mystics Retreat” in the memo line). \n \nPRAYING WITH THE ENGLISH MYSTICS: Contemplative Wisdom for Challenging Times \nFrom the visionary optimism of Julian of Norwich\, to the contemplative guidance of The Cloud of Unknowing and the encouraging words of Evelyn Underhill\, England has been home to a rich lineage of spiritual teachers. These great mystics have shared their timeless wisdom through a treasury of poetic and inspirational writings that continue to point us to a joyful and prayerful spiritual life. \nOur time together will include three conferences where we will explore the life and teachings of the English mystics\, with an eye to applying their wisdom to our daily life. We’ll explore their practical instruction for meditation\, and contemplation\, and reflect together on how their down-to-earth methods of prayer can transform our spiritual practice today. \nPlease join us on Zoom for any or all of these three sessions\, offered at 2pm Tuesday\, Wednesday\, and Thursday\, May 12-14. Each session will last about one hour. We’ll post the link at the Holy Cross website on the week of the retreat. \nNo preregistration is required for this retreat. \n— \nRetreat leader Carl McColman is the author of several books\, including Befriending Silence\, Answering the Contemplative Call\, and The Big Book of Christian Mysticism. He blogs on Christian spirituality and contemplative living at www.carlmccolman.com. McColman is a life-professed Lay Cistercian (a layperson under formal spiritual guidance of Cistercian monks) affiliated with the Trappist Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers\, Georgia. He has been a practitioner of Christian contemplative prayer and meditation for over 30 years.

SUMMARY:Promises of the Heart Online Course
DESCRIPTION:“Follow your heart.” It’s a classic phrase of advice and encouragement\, for we know that true wisdom is not just a matter of thinking logical thoughts. It emerges most assuredly from the intuition and insight that only our hearts provide. \nBut what does it really mean to “follow your heart\,” and how can the wisdom of the heart truly make a difference in our day-to-day lives? Fortunately\, each of the world’s great spiritual traditions has much to say about the blessings of the heart — and the gifts awaiting each of us\, deep within. \nThis all-new e-course celebrates the wisdom of the heart by drawing from sources throughout the world’s mystical traditions. Great teachers the world over help us discover the promises of the heart — promises we can weave into our own spiritual practice to embody a more joyful and conscious life. \nClick here to learn more and to register!

SUMMARY:Your Sacred Story: The Spiritual Practice of Journaling
DESCRIPTION:This online course is offered through Columbia Seminary’s Certificate Program in Spiritual Formation. \nWriting and spirituality have gone hand-in-hand from Biblical times to the present day. Keeping a journal can be an integral part of a daily prayer practice; it can be a tool for discernment and for seeking God’s will in our lives. This online course will explore journaling from a variety of perspectives including writing memoir\, writing as a form of prayer\, writing for healing and discernment\, and writing to share with others. \nStudents are asked to keep a journal as a spiritual discipline\, for the duration of the class. Each week includes topics for meditation and reflection. Students may share actual journal entries or reflections based on the week’s topics. Please note\, this is not a “Writer’s Workshop” so we will not be critiquing each other’s writing for grammar or style\, although students are encouraged to prayerfully reflect on one another’s entries and to explore the question of how the creative process of writing can be a tool for deepening our relationship with God.
