SUMMARY:In Person Retreat: Practical Mysticism\, Contemplative Spirituality for a Joyful Life
DESCRIPTION:I’ll be returning to one of my favorite monasteries — Holy Cross Monastery in West Park\, NY\, just north of Poughkeepsie — for a weekend retreat this spring on the topic of “Practical Mysticism: Contemplative Spirituality for a Joyful Life.”  \nThe 20th century theologian Karl Rahner famously said “The Christian of the future will be a mystic or will not exist.” But what could he have meant by this? What is mysticism\, and what does it have to do with ordinary people leading ordinary lives? \nThis retreat is for anyone who wants a deeper spirituality\, and who suspects that the great mystics\, visionaries\, and contemplatives of the Christian tradition have something to share with us. From medieval saints like Julian of Norwich to more recent figures like Howard Thurman or Thomas Merton\, every generation has produced people whose lives are steeped in prayer\, silence\, and a palpable spiritual joy. \nWe’ll bring mysticism down to earth and consider how the contemplative life is for everyone — not just saints or nuns and monks. We’ll reflect on what mysticism is\, why it matters\, and how we can draw on the wisdom of the mystics to find a deeper and more meaningful spiritual life\, right here and right now. \nSuggested reading for retreat: The New Big Book of Christian Mysticism. \nFor more information and to register\, click here: Practical Mysticism Retreat at Holy Cross Monastery.

SUMMARY:The Franciscan Way of Prayer (Online Retreat)
DESCRIPTION:The Franciscan Way of Prayer: Spiritual Wisdom from St. Francis of Assisi\n\nSt. Francis of Assisi is one of the most beloved of all saints\, and for good reason. He’s a patron saint of animals and ecology\, and was renowned for his compassionate care for the poor. He has been an inspiration to saints and ordinary people from his own day to the present (just think of Pope Francis!) Franciscan spirituality continues to inspire people of all walks of life. But beyond the birdbaths and the famous “Canticle of the Sun” just who was Francis? Our program will begin on Friday night by exploring the story of the young man from Assisi who walked away from a comfortable life to follow God’s call; we’ll begin to explore the key themes of Franciscan spirituality\, a topic which we’ll explore further on Saturday. Between the many legends of St. Francis\, his beautiful prayers\, and the charisms of the Franciscan order\, we’ll explore ways that anyone can draw closer to God’s love through the inspiration of the great saint from Assisi. \nThis retreat will take place on Zoom. There will be three conferences (all times are Eastern time): \nFriday Evening\, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM: Getting to Know St. Francis of Assisi: An overview of St. Francis’s life and the key themes of his spirituality. \nSaturday Morning: 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM: Pray like a Franciscan: Insights into prayer from great Franciscan teachers\, from Francis and Clare to Richard Rohr and Ilia Delio. \nSaturday Afternoon: 1:30 PM – 3:00 PM: Living a Franciscan Life: How can the Spirituality of St. Francis make a difference in our lives? Here are several ideas to get us started — and/or to take us deeper. \n\nPlease provide an email address when registering so you can receive the Zoom link.\n\nFor more information or to register\, please call the Rock Hill Oratory Center for Spirituality at (803) 327-2097. SUMMARY:Meeting Jesus in Your Heart: Praying with St. Ignatius of Loyola (A Retreat at the Rock Hill Oratory)
DESCRIPTION:I’ll be returning to one of my favorite retreat centers to lead another overnight retreat based on the spirituality of one of our greatest saints. This year we will be praying and reflecting on the life and wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola — and the rich tradition of Ignatian spirituality\, which emphasizes finding God in all things and using the imagination as a doorway to prayer. \nSt. Ignatius of Loyola (the founder of the Society of Jesus or Jesuits) was one of the great spiritual guides in the history of the church. He developed a rich and unique approach to prayer\, combining Biblical passages with the imagination to foster a deep encounter with Christ in our hearts. \nRetreat begins Friday evening\, October 11\, with a presentation on the life and key teachings of Ignatius\, and the story of the Spiritual Exercises. On Saturday we’ll move into a deeper\, more prayerful space\, using Ignatius’s methods to seek God’s will and direction for our lives and to enjoy the beautiful gift of God’s love and grace given to us through Christ and the Spirit. . \nRooms are available for out-of-town retreatants. To learn more about this event or to register\, please call (803) 327-2097 and ask for Judy. \nDownload a PDF flyer for this event by clicking here: Meeting Jesus in Your Heart.

SUMMARY:Restoring the Spiritual Heart: A Contemplative Retreat in Asheville\, NC
DESCRIPTION:Restoring the Spiritual Heart of Christianity:  A Mini Retreat Led by Carl McColman \n“I’m spiritual but not religious.” It’s a common refrain in our time\, especially by youth and young adults. But this idea that religion and spirituality are somehow different is a recent way of seeing things. Historically\, Christianity and spirituality would have been seen as basically the same thing. So for those of us who care about Christianity — or even if we just care about spirituality — how do we bring a meaningful inner life and the path of following Jesus back together? \n \nThis weekend retreat consists of two programs: \nFriday evening (7-9 PM) Carl McColman\, author of books like The Big Book of Christian Mysticism and Answering the Contemplative Call\, will discuss how “religion” and “spirituality” came to mean two separate things\, and what steps Christians can take in our day to restore the spiritual heart of life in Christ. We’ll have plenty of time for conversation and discussion\, and maybe even a prayer exercise or two. \nSaturday morning (9:30 AM-12:30 PM) we’ll look at the practice of spirituality\, by exploring traditional Christian exercises that bring prayer\, meditation and contemplation alive: practices like Centering Prayer\, Lectio Divina\, and the Jesus Prayer (also called “the Prayer of the Heart”). This will be an experiential program\, with time for prayer\, journaling\, and personal reflection. \n\nAbout the Retreat Leader: Carl McColman is a contemplative Christian blogger\, podcaster\, and author. His books include The Big Book of Christian Mysticism\, Answering the Contemplative Call\, Befriending Silence\, and Unteachable Lessons. He is a life-professed associate of the Trappist monastery in Conyers\, GA\, and a Centering Prayer instructor. Learn more about Carl by visiting his website at www.carlmccolman.com. \nCost for the Retreat: This retreat is offered on a love-offering basis. Suggested offering is $10 for Friday night\, $25 for Saturday\, or $30 for both events. No one is turned away for inability to pay. \nTo Register: pre-registration is not required\, but we appreciate knowing how many people to expect. So please indicate you are attending on our Facebook Events page\, or if you are allergic to Facebook\, contact Carl directly to indicate you will be attending. \nLimited Lodging Available: Haw Creek Commons has a limited number of guest rooms.
