Please join with me and the congregations of St. James’ and St. Columba’s Episcopal Churches for a special 3-week program for Advent reflection and prayer. \nOur theme is “Contemplative Wisdom and the Word.” I’ll be drawing on material from my most recent book\, Read the Bible Like a Mystic\, pairing it with reflections appropriate for the holy season of Advent. The program takes place on Monday evenings (December 1\, 8\, and 15) I’ll be at St. Columba’s Episcopal Church in Pa’auilo; and on Wednesday evenings (December 3\, 10 and 17) I’ll be at St. James’ Episcopal Church in Waimea. It will be the same program both nights: drawing from my book Read the Bible Like a Mystic but with a special eye to the rhythm of contemplative waiting and gentle rest that forms the character of the Advent season. Karl Rahner\, SJ famously said\, “The Christian of the future will be a mystic or will not exist.” If we turn that inside out\, it’s both a challenge and a promise: The wisdom of the mystics is necessary for a living faith\, and it is also the key to an ongoing vibrant spiritual life. \nDuring this retreat\, we will dive into the wisdom of some of the great mystics of the past to find practical advice to deepen our spiritual practice for today. We will consider the wisdom of mystics like Julian of Norwich\, Evelyn Underhill\, Howard Thurman\, and the anonymous author of The Cloud of Unknowing. There will be experiential exercises to put these teachings and insights into practice\, with plenty of time for personal prayer\, meditation\, contemplation\, and reflection\, along with opportunities for group reflection as well. \nCheck-in begins at 4pm. SUMMARY:In Person Retreat: Living Buddha\, Living Christ
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the Common Ground Between Christianity and Zen\n\nThomas Merton famously said that he saw no contradiction between Buddhism and Christianity. While that may be difficult to reconcile with the obvious doctrinal differences between the two faiths\, on the level of spiritual practice and compassionate presence it is easy to see many points of connection and commonality. Many Christian leaders\, including a number of Jesuits\, have embraced Zen as a philosophy and spiritual practice that integrates with Christianity in a way that is respectful of both traditions. This weekend retreat\, offered in the spirit of Vatican II\, draws its inspiration from the writings of the Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh\, whose book Living Buddha\, Living Christ has become a classic of interreligious dialogue. We won’t be arguing the merits or failings of either faith\, but rather hope to create a spacious hospitality where Christians\, Buddhists\, and members of other faiths can join together in silence\, faithful to our own religious identity yet finding joy and fellowship in sharing a retreat together.

Either way\, hope to see you there! \nGifts of the Heart:\nInvitation to a Contemplative Life In Our Time \nEver since Thomas Keating’s classic book Open Mind\, Open Heart was published in 1986\, Centering Prayer has been understood as a heart-centered spiritual practice: indeed\, Orthodox Christians have always described contemplative prayer as “the prayer of the heart.” As contemplatives\, we are invited to appreciate the many gifts that the Spirit has placed in our hearts — and how those gifts can guide us to a richer and deeper spiritual life. \nDrawing on wisdom from the Bible\, the writings of the mystics\, and inspiration from spiritual traditions the world over\, we can see that the heart is more than just a symbol for emotion or a metaphor for love: it is the seat of our embodied intuition that truly puts the “center” in “centering prayer.” The New Testament promises us that the love of God is poured into our hearts through the Spirit (Romans 5:5); it is that love that meets us in the luminous silence that we discover between our thoughts and distractions.
