SUMMARY:Interfaith Afternoon Conversation: Poetry and Mysticism (In Person in Atlanta)
DESCRIPTION:Ignatius House\, the Jesuit Retreat Center in Atlanta\, has a wonderful new initiative: a series of Interfaith Afternoon Events on topics related to art and spirituality. I’ll be leading one of these events on March 23\, 2025. Here’s the details: \nSpiritual Poetry as a Sacred Practice\nAs part of Ignatius House’s Art in an Interfaith Context series\, we invite you to an Afternoon Conversation of 2025: Art & Faith: Spiritual Poetry as a Sacred Practice. Join us on Sunday\, March 23\, 2025\, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM for this inspiring event\, facilitated by local author and Ignatius House-affiliated spiritual director Carl McColman. \nFrom the soulful verses of Rumi and Saint John of the Cross to the sacred lyrics of hymns and canticles\, poetry has long served as a profound way for humanity to express the mysteries of the Spirit\, even when words fall short. The love poetry of The Song of Songs\, the inspiring Magnificat\, and the honest devotion of the Psalms are just a few examples of the Bible’s rich poetic tradition. Yet\, every spiritual path around the world offers its own luminous verse—whether it’s the Zen haikus of Basho\, the passionate love poetry of Mirabai\, or the wisdom of the Tao Te Ching. \nDuring this session\, Carl will guide us through a meditative exploration of spiritual poetry from across the globe\, using the ancient practice of lectio divina (sacred reading). Our time together will feel less like a class and more like a mini-retreat\, as we reflect on poetry’s invitation to prayer and contemplation. We will explore both mystical classics from the past and contemporary poetry from voices like Mary Oliver\, Chelan Harkin\, and David Whyte. If you have a favorite poem\, feel free to bring it along to share—but even if you’re new to poetry\, we welcome you to join this enriching and down-to-earth experience. \nThere’s no charge for this event\, but pre-registration is required. SUMMARY:In-Person Retreat: Practical Mysticism
DESCRIPTION:Once again\, I’m so honored to return to the Rock Hill Oratory for a retreat I lead there every October. This year’s theme is “Practical Mysticism” and you can attend online if getting to Rock Hill isn’t an option. Either way\, hope you can join in. \n  \nPRACTICAL MYSTICISM\n\nThe Wisdom of the Christian Mystics for Today\nCarl McColman\nFriday\, October 25 – 7:00 – 9:00 pm\nSaturday\, October 26\, 2024  9:30 am – 4:00 pm \nThe 20th century theologian Karl Rahner famously said\, “The Christian of the future will be a mystic or will not exist.” But what could he have meant by this? What is mysticism\, and what does it have to do with ordinary people leading ordinary lives? This retreat is for anyone who wants a deeper spirituality\, and who suspects that the great mystics\, visionaries\, and contemplatives of the Christian tradition have something to share with us. Drawing on the wisdom of great mystics like Julian of Norwich\, St. Teresa of Ávila and Evelyn Underhill\, we’ll bring mysticism down to earth and consider how the contemplative life is for everyone — not just saints or nuns and monks. We’ll reflect on what mysticism is\, why it matters\, and how we can draw on the wisdom of the mystics to find a deeper and more meaningful spiritual life\, right here and right now. Friday Evening: Wisdom of the Christian Mystics: An overview of some of the key teachings of the great mystics and contemplatives of history\, and how those teachings can inspire our faith journeys today. Saturday: Practical Christian Mysticism: A more practical/experiential retreat day\, where we’ll consider some of the mystics’ teachings on prayer\, meditation and contemplation: with plenty of time for personal prayer and group reflection. Carl McColman is a contemplative writer\, spiritual director and retreat leader based in Atlanta. His books include The New Big Book of Christian Mysticism and Eternal Heart: the Mystical Path to a Joyful Life. \nThis program will be available in-person and online. Pre-registration is required to receive the link.\nSuggested Donation: $55. Limited overnight accommodations available for Friday night: $45

SUMMARY:Contemplative Summit (Online Event)\, October 24-27\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:I’m so honored to be one of the presenters of the Spiritual Wanderlust 2024 Contemplative Summit! I’m joining other contemplative writers and teaches like Carmen Acevedo Butcher\, James Finley\, Kaira Jewel Lingo\, James Martin\, Christine Valters Paintner\, and many others\, for four days of conversation and exploration of various topics related to contemplative practice and spiritual living. \nThe event is free\, but you need to pre-register by clicking here: school.spiritualwanderlust.org/a/2147964072/nYbfKp4J. (disclosure: please use this link\, if you decide to purchase one of the optional paid upgrades\, then I will get a commission and wouldn’t that be nice!?!) \nThis year the organizers of the summit asked me to speak about contemplation and psychedelics. I’ve written about this before\, so it’s a topic that I believe is timely and important\, especially as more and more research is being done into the use of psychedelic medicines for the treatment of depression\, anxiety\, PTSD\, and end-of-life care. And of course\, many indigenous cultures continue to use psychoactive plants for ceremonial and sacramental purposes. I know this might be a new topic for many people\, and perhaps even controversial — so please attend the summit and hear what I have to say! \nHere’s the description of the event from the organizers: \n\nThis year’s Summit is an invitation to explore the Mystery that lies beyond certitude and control. As we gather with fellow seekers\, we’ll learn from some of the most profound voices in contemplative spirituality—teachers like James Finley\, Suzanne Stabile\, and Fr. James Martin. We’ll delve into what it means to live fully\, even in the darkest seasons of life. \nIf you’ve ever felt a longing for something deeper\, if you’re searching for wisdom\, healing\, or a greater sense of connection\, this Summit is for you. Together\, we’ll explore: \n\n\nHow can the teachings of the mystics can shape our spiritual growth? \n\n\nWhat do our divine longings teach us?  \n\n\nHow do we navigate the dark seasons of our lives? \n\n\nI hope you’ll join me and thousands of others on this transformative journey. The doors are wide open—are you ready to step through? \n\nClick here to register for the Contemplative Summit!

SUMMARY:In-Person Retreat: "Gifts of the Heart: An Invitation to the Contemplative Life"
DESCRIPTION:I’m so honored to be leading the annual retreat for Minnesota Contemplative Outreach. Join us for the weekend at the beautiful Christ the King Retreat Center in Buffalo\, Minnesota\, or participate online. Either way\, hope to see you there! \nGifts of the Heart:\nInvitation to a Contemplative Life In Our Time \nEver since Thomas Keating’s classic book Open Mind\, Open Heart was published in 1986\, Centering Prayer has been understood as a heart-centered spiritual practice: indeed\, Orthodox Christians have always described contemplative prayer as “the prayer of the heart.” As contemplatives\, we are invited to appreciate the many gifts that the Spirit has placed in our hearts — and how those gifts can guide us to a richer and deeper spiritual life. \nDrawing on wisdom from the Bible\, the writings of the mystics\, and inspiration from spiritual traditions the world over\, we can see that the heart is more than just a symbol for emotion or a metaphor for love: it is the seat of our embodied intuition that truly puts the “center” in “centering prayer.” The New Testament promises us that the love of God is poured into our hearts through the Spirit (Romans 5:5); it is that love that meets us in the luminous silence that we discover between our thoughts and distractions. And yet\, that is just one of the gifts that makes every heart the place where human and divine truly meet. \nContemplative author Carl McColman combines the insights of heart-centered wisdom with his own longstanding Centering Prayer practice to offer a joyful and light-hearted (pardon the  pun) guide to the gifts of the heart. \nTalks: \n\nYour Heart is a Silent Path to God\nThe Mind of God and the Gift of (New) Life\nThe Dance of Wisdom and Love\nEternal Heart\, Divine Heart\, Heart of Joy\n\nSaturday evening activity:  \n\nImaginative Prayer: Your Heart is Your Guide\n\nThrough conferences\, group activities\, and personal Lectio Divina\, this retreat will address both mind and heart\, intellect and spirit. \nIn addition to live online sessions led by Carl\, our Fall Retreat will include time for personal reflection\, group Centering Prayer\, and small group sharing. Silence will be observed from Friday evening after dinner until Sunday lunch. We will be upheld in our journey by the restful quiet and beauty of Christ the King Retreat Center in Buffalo\, MN.

SUMMARY:In-Person Retreat Day: "Mystical Wisdom for Centering Prayer"
DESCRIPTION:I’ll be joining the Centering Prayer group at St. James Episcopal Church in Marietta\, GA on Saturday\, October 5\, 2024 from 9 AM to Noon\, to explore the relationship between mysticism and Centering Prayer. The event is open to the public (tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door). Hope you can join us! \nHere’s the description of the event: \nThe Wisdom of the Christian Mystics\n Karl Rahner SJ famously said “The Christian of the future will be a mystic or will not exist.” If we turn that inside out\, it’s both a challenge and a promise: the wisdom of the mystics is necessary for a living faith\, and it is also the key to an ongoing vibrant spiritual life. For this retreat\, we will dive into the wisdom of some of the great mystics of the past\, for the purpose of finding practical advice to deepen our spiritual practice for today. We’ll consider the wisdom of mystics like Julian of Norwich\, Evelyn Underhill\, Howard Thurman\, and the anonymous author of  The Cloud of Unknowing. We’ll have time for centering prayer  to put the mystics’  teachings and insights into practice\, with plenty of time for personal prayer and reflection\, along with opportunities for group reflection as well.

SUMMARY:In-Person Workshop: Meditation for Accessing Mystical Wisdom
DESCRIPTION:Atlanta folks\, here’s a free event at the Phoenix and Dragon Bookstore\, where I worked from 2001 to 2006 — it’s such a joy to be invited back to share some reflections and create the space for group meditation. See you there at 1 PM on Sunday\, September 22\, 2024. Our time together will include meditation exercises and time for questions/shared conversation. Here’s the description of the program: \nWhat does it mean to experience the Divine Within? To be one with the Spirit? To access our innate inner guidance? It has been said that “mystics are not special kinds of people\, each person is a special kind of mystic.” Through meditation and imaginal exploration\, access and celebrate your unique expression of the mystical. If you are longing for a deeper connection with the Spirit within\, come to this fun and inspirational program to explore meditation methods for knowing and expressing your own mystical wisdom.

SUMMARY:In Person Retreat: Two Paths to Contemplative Prayer
DESCRIPTION:One of the high points of every year is the opportunity to lead a retreat at one of the most beautiful places in Atlanta\, the Ignatius House Retreat Center. Here are the details\, or just go ahead and click here to register! \nSpiritual Wisdom from St. Ignatius and Thomas Merton\nRetreat leader Carl McColman invites us to draw closer to God through silent\, restful prayer and contemplation. We’ll look at two great teachers of Christian spirituality: St. Ignatius of Loyola and Thomas Merton\, and we’ll explore how they offer two different\, but complementary\, approaches to contemplation. Together\, Ignatius and Merton invite us to find God in all things\, to be still and know and to discover the love of the Holy Spirit hidden in our hearts. \nThis is a silent retreat. Guests are expected to maintain a sacred silence throughout the retreat\, including at meals\, unless otherwise noted. \nCarl McColman is a contemplative Christian author\, speaker\, and retreat leader based in Clarkston\, GA. He is a professed lay associate of the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers\, GA; and a commissioned presenter of Centering Prayer introductory workshops. His books include Eternal Heart\, The Big Book of Christian Mysticism\, Answering the Contemplative Call\, and Befriending Silence. \nClick here to register for this retreat.

SUMMARY:In-Person Day of Reflection: Christian Spirituality & Gender Diversity
DESCRIPTION:The New Testament boldly proclaims “there is neither male nor female: for are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28)\, but for so many people\, gender difference is a cause for much social and political conflict — and spiritual questioning. What is a healthy way for people of faith to approach gender issues in our time? What is the place of transgender persons in the church\, let alone society? Is there a contemplative way of understanding concepts such as gender fluidity or nonbinary gender\, where the old idea that everyone is male or female is challenged by a sense that gender is a spectrum — a rainbow\, rather than strictly black and white? \nOur retreat day will seek to meet these challenging and fraught questions with a heart of silence\, trust\, and appreciation for our diverse world. We will not seek to answer all questions or promote one particular social or political point of view. Our inspiration will come from Christian saints and mystics of the past who did not always “fit in the box” of societal expectations regarding gender and sexuality. We’ll look at Julian of Norwich’s fascinating teachings about the Motherhood of God\, St. Wilgefortis’s suprising image as a miraculous “bearded” woman\, and Pauli Murray\, the 20th century Episcopal Priest whose own identity blurred the lines separating male and female. \nTo register for this day of reflection\, click here. \nOur goal will not be to debate or argue about the many different ways we can approach the mystery of gender\, but rather to reflect on how gender (and sexuality) are essential elements of what it means to be human — and therefore are inescapable elements of spirituality. However God created us\, we are all invited to grow deeper in prayer and faith by presenting our entire selves to God through prayer\, meditation and contemplation. As a day of reflection and silence\, our time together will be an opportunity to grow in faith as we reflect on the mystery of being created in God’s own image. \nThis is a contemplative quiet day (day of reflection). The presenter will offer several brief talks followed by invitations to prayer and time for silence and personal reflection. We’ll have some opportunity for shared group reflection at the end of the day. Lunch is included. Guided by Carl McColman. \nIf you’d like to make this a mini-retreat\, you have the option to come to Bon Secours the evening before the day of reflection and spend the night in silence (there’s no programming that evening\, just time for your own immersion into silence). For more information about the overnight retreat option\, click here.ay

SUMMARY:Book Signing in Woodstock\, New York
DESCRIPTION:After my retreat at Holy Cross Monastery finishes up on Sunday\, June 2\, I’ll be driving up the road to Woodstock for my first-ever event in that legendary town! Co-sponsored by St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church at the Golden Notebook Bookstore\, we’re billing this event as:\n\n\nA Book Signing and Conversation on Christian Mysticism\, Celtic Paganism\, Zen Buddhism\, Gender/Sexuality\, and Other Gates into Nondual/Nonbinary Reality\nFeaturing Carl McColman\, author of The New Big Book of Christian Mysticism and Spirit of the Celtic Gods and Goddesses\n \nIn the mid-twentieth century\, a leading Catholic theologian said “The Christian of the future will be a mystic or will not exist at all.” Today\, many churches are closing their doors\, but others have retreated into Christian nationalism and authoritarianism. Is there a place for a truly life-affirming spirituality\, in a world where religion seems to be on life-support\, society is bitterly divided\, and our economic system continues to separate the world into haves and have-nots? Can meditation save the world (or is it just an indulgence for privileged people)? These are the kinds of questions that author Carl McColman loves to explore. Carl is the author of books on Christian mysticism\, Celtic spirituality\, and Paganism\, and is both a Christian and a practicing Buddhist. Our time together will include some short readings from Carl’s books\, a short talk about interspirituality and authenticity as keys to a joyful and meaningful life\, and then plenty of time for conversation/Q&A.\n\n\nI believe there’s no charge for the event\, although a donation basket will be available. Books will be available for purchase (and autographing). Hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:In Person Retreat: Practical Mysticism\, Contemplative Spirituality for a Joyful Life
DESCRIPTION:I’ll be returning to one of my favorite monasteries — Holy Cross Monastery in West Park\, NY\, just north of Poughkeepsie — for a weekend retreat this spring on the topic of “Practical Mysticism: Contemplative Spirituality for a Joyful Life.”  \nThe 20th century theologian Karl Rahner famously said “The Christian of the future will be a mystic or will not exist.” But what could he have meant by this? What is mysticism\, and what does it have to do with ordinary people leading ordinary lives? \nThis retreat is for anyone who wants a deeper spirituality\, and who suspects that the great mystics\, visionaries\, and contemplatives of the Christian tradition have something to share with us. From medieval saints like Julian of Norwich to more recent figures like Howard Thurman or Thomas Merton\, every generation has produced people whose lives are steeped in prayer\, silence\, and a palpable spiritual joy. \nWe’ll bring mysticism down to earth and consider how the contemplative life is for everyone — not just saints or nuns and monks. We’ll reflect on what mysticism is\, why it matters\, and how we can draw on the wisdom of the mystics to find a deeper and more meaningful spiritual life\, right here and right now. \nSuggested reading for retreat: The New Big Book of Christian Mysticism. \nFor more information and to register\, click here: Practical Mysticism Retreat at Holy Cross Monastery.

SUMMARY:Online Presentation: The Psalms and Poetry (with Alice Camille and Paul Boudreau)
DESCRIPTION:The Language of Praise from the Psalms to Mary Oliver (And Beyond)\nAlice Camille\, Paul Boudreau\, and Carl McColman \nThursday\, April 25\, 2024 7:30-9:00 pm Online — Click here to register. \nThe most beloved book in the Old Testament – perhaps even the entire Bible – is the Psalms. This collection of 150 Hebrew hymns formed the spiritual life of ancient Israel – and of Jesus\, along with monks\, nuns\, and mystics of every generation since. Modern-day musicians (U2)\, poets (Mary Oliver)\, and writers (Nan Merrill) have been influenced by this great biblical prayer-book. For this virtual conversation\, join us for an evening celebrating the spirituality of the Psalms and to consider how they continue to influence us. We’ll look at our favorite Psalms\, poems and songs inspired by or based on Psalms\, and maybe imagine what new psalms for the modern era might be needed. \nIf you’ve attended Alice\, Paul and Carl’s previous programs for the Oratory (on Star Trek and pop music)\, you know they combine a deep love for the Bible and the spiritual life with an equal appreciation for pop culture. St. Ignatius encourages us to “find God in all things”. Alice\, Paul and Carl make the search fun!

SUMMARY:Online Course: Lent with the Mystics (Spirituality and Practice)
DESCRIPTION:To learn more about this e-course and to register for it\, click here. \nSpirituality & Practice is one of my favorite online websites/communities\, offering a truly interspiritual approach to cultivating the interior life. I’ve been leading online courses for S&P for several years now\, so imagine how thrilled I was when I was approached to lead their 2024 Lenten program! Naturally\, we decided my theme would be “Lent with the Mystics” and I’d develop the course around how the Lenten themes of fasting\, giving and prayer pair well with the classic mystical process of purification\, illumination\, and deification/union. \nThis course will include a series of emails with quotations from great mystics\, my reflection on their wisdom\, prompts for your own journaling\, meditation and prayer\, and a robust practice circle where you can interact with me and with the other course participants. We’ll also have a Zoom call on March 21 which will be recorded in case you can’t attend in person. Plus\, if you’re a chaplain\, this course counts for six continuing education hours. \nInterested? SUMMARY:Interview: Carl McColman in Conversation with Richard Smiley
DESCRIPTION:Richard Smoley\, editor of Quest Magazine and author of books like Inner Christianity and How God Became God\, recently interviewed me to celebrate the publication of The New Big Book of Christian Mysticism. A shortened form of the interview will be published in Quest\, but we recorded the Zoom call and so the Theosophical Society of America (who publishes Quest) is going to release the interview on October 19\, 2023 at 7 PM Central Time. \nWe had an energetic and wide-ranging interview. I admire Richard greatly as a writer and scholar\, but he and I do not eye to eye on everything\, and so this interview crackles with energy as we explore some challenging topics together. We talk about the relationship between mysticism and religion\, the distinction between Christianity as a wisdom tradition and Christianity as the institutional church\, and why I see a difference between mysticism and esotericism and how that understanding shaped my book. But the interview is not a debate\, and so we also explore much common ground\, including our shared appreciation for Centering Prayer and the importance of fostering a nuanced understanding of the mysticism of love. \nWhether you are new to my work or have been reading my stuff for a while\, I think you are going to find this a fascinating interview. Its online debut will be streamed on YouTube\, Facebook\, and The Theosophy Society of America’s website  on Thursday\, October 19 at 7:00 p.m. CT. I hope you check it out! \nClick here for more information about this free online event.

SUMMARY:In-Person Class: Christian Prayer and Eastern Meditation
DESCRIPTION:For more information or to register\, click here. \nBede Griffiths went to India. Thomas Merton befriended the Dalai Lama. Jesuit priests like Robert Kennedy\, Ruben Habito and Thomas Hand have all incorporated Zen meditation into their Christian practice. \nAgain and again\, Christian spiritual seekers and leaders have found inspiration and insight from a variety of eastern meditative practices. Perhaps the great invitation for our time\, at least for Christians\, is to find creative and positive ways to maintain our identity as followers of Jesus Christ\, while also celebrating and learning from the wisdom of the world’s meditative traditions. \nThis five week program will combine meditation practice with reflections on how Christianity and eastern practice can be brought together in a way that respects the beauty and integrity of each tradition. We will learn several different meditation practices and reflect together on how such practices can be appropriately integrated into the Christian life. \nStudents from all faiths or wisdom backgrounds are welcome\, and at all level of meditation practice\, beginner to advanced level. \nMeets on Wednesday  evenings for five weeks\, from October 4 to November 8\, 2023 (NO CLASS on October 18)\, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at Ignatius House. \nCost: $50\, inclusive of all instructional materials. Click here to register. \nCarl McColman has been a practitioner of Christian forms of meditation for over 30 years\, having learned meditation from the Shalem Institute\, which integrates classical Christian spirituality with practices inspired by Tibetan Buddhism. He is a spiritual director\, retreat leader\, nationally known author\, and a commissioned presenter of Centering Prayer workshops.

SUMMARY:Ireland Pilgrimage: September 20-27\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:Update: Our Ireland Pilgrimage is full. Please click here to be added to the waiting list. \n \nI’ve partnered with Zeitgeist\, an Atlanta-based spiritual community\, to create a special interspiritual pilgrimage to Sacred Ireland in September 2023! We’ll explore sacred sites from both the pre-Christian and Christian traditions\, celebrate the spiritual wisdom from Irish folklore\, myth\, story and song\, and simply revel in the splendor and beauty of the Emerald Isle in fall! We are intentionally keeping the size of this pilgrimage small — we’re thinking 12 to no more than 20 people — so that we can have a sacred experience (and not just a packaged tour). People of all faith traditions (or no tradition) are welcome. Enrollment is limited\, obviously — so if this is of interest\, follow the link to learn more and to reserve your spot. \nZeitgeist Pilgrimage to Sacred Ireland\, September 2023 — Information and Reservation Details — Click here to be added to the waiting list. \n \n \n \nNote: Our Ireland Pilgrimage is full. SUMMARY:In Person Workshop: Introduction to Celtic Spirituality (in Dublin!)
DESCRIPTION:An American\, talking about Celtic spirituality at a church in Dublin? I suppose stranger things have happened! But when my good friend Fr. Jim Caffrey invited me to give a couple of talks at his parish church\, it was his idea for me to share my love of the Celtic tradition. So with humility and respect\, I look forward to joining an Irish faith community and sharing my love for their spiritual heritage! \nIf you’d like to join me\, the talks will be on Monday and Tuesday\, September 18 and 19\, 2023 at the Church of the Ascension in Balally. Both events will take place at 7:30 PM in the evening\, and last for about an hour. If you’re in or around Dublin\, I hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Book Release Party: The New Big Book of Christian Mysticism
DESCRIPTION:Hi friends\, you are invited to come to the Cathedral of Saint Philip at 7 PM on Thursday\, August 31 to celebrate the publication of The New Big Book of Christian Mysticism. \nHere’s the write up from the Cathedral Bookstore’s Website: \n\n \nBook Launch Celebration for:\nThe New Big Book of Christian Mysticism by author Carl McColman\nWhen:  August 31\, 2023 at 7:00p.m.\nWhere:  The Cathedral Bookstore inside the Cathedral of St. Philip\, Atlanta\, GA\nPre-order the book:  click here \nThis program is free and open to the public \nAbout the Book:\n“The Christian of the future will be a mystic—or will not exist.” These words from theologian Karl Rahner uttered half a century ago seem more relevant than ever. Is mysticism necessary for the survival of Christianity? What exactly is Christian mysticism? How can it be relevant in our crisis-ridden world? Questions like these inspire The New Big Book of Christian Mysticism\, a newly updated edition from beloved spiritual teacher and bestselling author Carl McColman. \nThe New Big Book of Christian Mysticism serves as both introduction and practical instruction for a living contemplative practice today. In addition to the overview of mysticism\, spiritual and prayer practices\, the various types of mysticism in Christian tradition\, and influential mystics through the millennia\, this second edition offers an embodied understanding of the mystic life and includes a more diverse range of voices and perspectives\, including new chapter themes on sexuality\, queerness\, and social justice. \n“Mysticism is not mystifying at all\, but simple\, always available\, and utterly clarifying. Carl McColman’s much-needed book will allow you to experience this for yourself! Christians and all Seekers will find both meat and dessert in such a full meal.” —Richard Rohr\, OFM and author of The Naked Now: Learning to See as the Mystics See and Everything Belongs \n“Mainstream religion\, highjacked to a dualistic and zero-sum worldview pitting us against one another and against the planet\, is poisoning the human soul. Carl McColman’s The New Big Book of Christian Mysticism provides an antidote for anyone who dares to read it. If you identify as Christian\, make this book a new Gospel. If you are not\, read it as a catalyst to finding the mystic heart of your own spiritual identity.” — Rabbi Rami Shapiro\, author of Perennial Wisdom for the Spiritually Independent \nAbout the Author:\nCarl McColman is a contemplative writer\, storyteller\, podcaster\, and spiritual director. He is a life-professed member of a lay Cistercian community under the spiritual guidance of Trappist monks. He is the author of numerous books\, including Eternal Heart\, and regularly speaks and leads retreats on topics related to Christian mysticism\, Celtic spirituality\, and interfaith dialogue. Carl and his wife\, artist Fran McColman\, live near Atlanta\, Georgia. \nSee other Carl McColman books here. \nVisit the Cathedral Bookstore’s Website to learn more: https://www.cathedralbookstore.org/about-us/events/

SUMMARY:Retreat: The Spirituality of Julian of Norwich
DESCRIPTION:To register for this event\, click here. \nJulian of Norwich\, according to Thomas Merton\, is “without doubt one of the most wonderful of all Christian voices.” Julian lived in the fourteenth century and experienced a series of visions centered on divine love; she wrote a book about her visions — the first book written in the English language by a woman. Today\, she is widely regarded as one of the greatest of Christian mystics\, and her teachings offer a rich and beautiful approach to the transformational power of contemplative prayer. This retreat will weave together insights from Julian’s writing with spiritual exercises inspired by her wisdom and plenty of time for reflection\, journaling\, and silence. \nJulian of Norwich: just one of the many contemplative treasures in the Catholic tradition.\nTo register for this event\, click here.
