Our time together will include meditations\, silence\, prayer\, and journaling\, plus optional opportunities for shared discussion and reflection. \nCost: $30. Scholarships available. \nCarl McColman is a spiritual director\, retreat leader\, blogger\, podcaster\, and widely known speaker and teacher on mystical spirituality and contemplative living. He is the author of many books\, including The New Big Book of Christian Mysticism\, Eternal Heart\, and Unteachable Lessons. Carl’s approach to spirituality and mysticism is inclusive and expansive; he is dedicated to exploring the common ground between faith traditions\, with a particular interest in the connecting points between Christian\, Buddhist and Pagan wisdom. Carl lives with his wife\, artist Fran McColman\, in Clarkston\, Georgia\, near Atlanta. \nFor more information\, please email the retreat organizers at info@shalemmidwestregion.org.

SUMMARY:Interview: Carl McColman in Conversation with Richard Smiley
DESCRIPTION:Richard Smoley\, editor of Quest Magazine and author of books like Inner Christianity and How God Became God\, recently interviewed me to celebrate the publication of The New Big Book of Christian Mysticism. A shortened form of the interview will be published in Quest\, but we recorded the Zoom call and so the Theosophical Society of America (who publishes Quest) is going to release the interview on October 19\, 2023 at 7 PM Central Time. \nWe had an energetic and wide-ranging interview. I admire Richard greatly as a writer and scholar\, but he and I do not eye to eye on everything\, and so this interview crackles with energy as we explore some challenging topics together. We talk about the relationship between mysticism and religion\, the distinction between Christianity as a wisdom tradition and Christianity as the institutional church\, and why I see a difference between mysticism and esotericism and how that understanding shaped my book. But the interview is not a debate\, and so we also explore much common ground\, including our shared appreciation for Centering Prayer and the importance of fostering a nuanced understanding of the mysticism of love. \nWhether you are new to my work or have been reading my stuff for a while\, I think you are going to find this a fascinating interview. Its online debut will be streamed on YouTube\, Facebook\, and The Theosophy Society of America’s website  on Thursday\, October 19 at 7:00 p.m. CT. I hope you check it out! \nClick here for more information about this free online event.

SUMMARY:In-Person Class: Christian Prayer and Eastern Meditation
DESCRIPTION:For more information or to register\, click here. \nBede Griffiths went to India. Thomas Merton befriended the Dalai Lama. Jesuit priests like Robert Kennedy\, Ruben Habito and Thomas Hand have all incorporated Zen meditation into their Christian practice. \nAgain and again\, Christian spiritual seekers and leaders have found inspiration and insight from a variety of eastern meditative practices. Perhaps the great invitation for our time\, at least for Christians\, is to find creative and positive ways to maintain our identity as followers of Jesus Christ\, while also celebrating and learning from the wisdom of the world’s meditative traditions. \nThis five week program will combine meditation practice with reflections on how Christianity and eastern practice can be brought together in a way that respects the beauty and integrity of each tradition. We will learn several different meditation practices and reflect together on how such practices can be appropriately integrated into the Christian life. \nStudents from all faiths or wisdom backgrounds are welcome\, and at all level of meditation practice\, beginner to advanced level. \nMeets on Wednesday  evenings for five weeks\, from October 4 to November 8\, 2023 (NO CLASS on October 18)\, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at Ignatius House. \nCost: $50\, inclusive of all instructional materials. Click here to register. \nCarl McColman has been a practitioner of Christian forms of meditation for over 30 years\, having learned meditation from the Shalem Institute\, which integrates classical Christian spirituality with practices inspired by Tibetan Buddhism. He is a spiritual director\, retreat leader\, nationally known author\, and a commissioned presenter of Centering Prayer workshops.

SUMMARY:Ireland Pilgrimage: September 20-27\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:Update: Our Ireland Pilgrimage is full. Please click here to be added to the waiting list. \n \nI’ve partnered with Zeitgeist\, an Atlanta-based spiritual community\, to create a special interspiritual pilgrimage to Sacred Ireland in September 2023! We’ll explore sacred sites from both the pre-Christian and Christian traditions\, celebrate the spiritual wisdom from Irish folklore\, myth\, story and song\, and simply revel in the splendor and beauty of the Emerald Isle in fall! We are intentionally keeping the size of this pilgrimage small — we’re thinking 12 to no more than 20 people — so that we can have a sacred experience (and not just a packaged tour). People of all faith traditions (or no tradition) are welcome. Enrollment is limited\, obviously — so if this is of interest\, follow the link to learn more and to reserve your spot. \nZeitgeist Pilgrimage to Sacred Ireland\, September 2023 — Information and Reservation Details — Click here to be added to the waiting list. \n \n \n \nNote: Our Ireland Pilgrimage is full. SUMMARY:In Person Workshop: Introduction to Celtic Spirituality (in Dublin!)
DESCRIPTION:An American\, talking about Celtic spirituality at a church in Dublin? I suppose stranger things have happened! But when my good friend Fr. Jim Caffrey invited me to give a couple of talks at his parish church\, it was his idea for me to share my love of the Celtic tradition. So with humility and respect\, I look forward to joining an Irish faith community and sharing my love for their spiritual heritage! \nIf you’d like to join me\, the talks will be on Monday and Tuesday\, September 18 and 19\, 2023 at the Church of the Ascension in Balally. Both events will take place at 7:30 PM in the evening\, and last for about an hour. If you’re in or around Dublin\, I hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Book Release Party: The New Big Book of Christian Mysticism
DESCRIPTION:Hi friends\, you are invited to come to the Cathedral of Saint Philip at 7 PM on Thursday\, August 31 to celebrate the publication of The New Big Book of Christian Mysticism. \nHere’s the write up from the Cathedral Bookstore’s Website: \n\n \nBook Launch Celebration for:\nThe New Big Book of Christian Mysticism by author Carl McColman\nWhen:  August 31\, 2023 at 7:00p.m.\nWhere:  The Cathedral Bookstore inside the Cathedral of St. Philip\, Atlanta\, GA\nPre-order the book:  click here \nThis program is free and open to the public \nAbout the Book:\n“The Christian of the future will be a mystic—or will not exist.” These words from theologian Karl Rahner uttered half a century ago seem more relevant than ever. Is mysticism necessary for the survival of Christianity? What exactly is Christian mysticism? How can it be relevant in our crisis-ridden world? Questions like these inspire The New Big Book of Christian Mysticism\, a newly updated edition from beloved spiritual teacher and bestselling author Carl McColman. \nThe New Big Book of Christian Mysticism serves as both introduction and practical instruction for a living contemplative practice today. In addition to the overview of mysticism\, spiritual and prayer practices\, the various types of mysticism in Christian tradition\, and influential mystics through the millennia\, this second edition offers an embodied understanding of the mystic life and includes a more diverse range of voices and perspectives\, including new chapter themes on sexuality\, queerness\, and social justice. \n“Mysticism is not mystifying at all\, but simple\, always available\, and utterly clarifying. Carl McColman’s much-needed book will allow you to experience this for yourself! Christians and all Seekers will find both meat and dessert in such a full meal.” —Richard Rohr\, OFM and author of The Naked Now: Learning to See as the Mystics See and Everything Belongs \n“Mainstream religion\, highjacked to a dualistic and zero-sum worldview pitting us against one another and against the planet\, is poisoning the human soul. Carl McColman’s The New Big Book of Christian Mysticism provides an antidote for anyone who dares to read it. If you identify as Christian\, make this book a new Gospel. If you are not\, read it as a catalyst to finding the mystic heart of your own spiritual identity.” — Rabbi Rami Shapiro\, author of Perennial Wisdom for the Spiritually Independent \nAbout the Author:\nCarl McColman is a contemplative writer\, storyteller\, podcaster\, and spiritual director. He is a life-professed member of a lay Cistercian community under the spiritual guidance of Trappist monks. He is the author of numerous books\, including Eternal Heart\, and regularly speaks and leads retreats on topics related to Christian mysticism\, Celtic spirituality\, and interfaith dialogue. Carl and his wife\, artist Fran McColman\, live near Atlanta\, Georgia. \nSee other Carl McColman books here. \nVisit the Cathedral Bookstore’s Website to learn more: https://www.cathedralbookstore.org/about-us/events/

SUMMARY:Retreat: The Spirituality of Julian of Norwich
DESCRIPTION:To register for this event\, click here. \nJulian of Norwich\, according to Thomas Merton\, is “without doubt one of the most wonderful of all Christian voices.” Julian lived in the fourteenth century and experienced a series of visions centered on divine love; she wrote a book about her visions — the first book written in the English language by a woman. Today\, she is widely regarded as one of the greatest of Christian mystics\, and her teachings offer a rich and beautiful approach to the transformational power of contemplative prayer. This retreat will weave together insights from Julian’s writing with spiritual exercises inspired by her wisdom and plenty of time for reflection\, journaling\, and silence. \nJulian of Norwich: just one of the many contemplative treasures in the Catholic tradition.\nTo register for this event\, click here.

SUMMARY:Online Retreat: Wisdom of the Christian Mystics (with Brother Elias)
DESCRIPTION:This event has been moved to online. Please register to join us on Zoom. \nIt’s become an annual tradition! Every fall I co-facilitate this retreat with Brother Elias\, the author of Tears of an Innocent God. This year\, we’ve moved the dates back to January\, and we’ll be online\, so hope you can join us! \nWisdom of the Christian Mystics\n(Br. Elias & Carl McColman)\nFrom the Desert Fathers to Julian of Norwich to Thomas Merton\, Christian history is filled with stories of men and women who experienced a profound sense of God’s presence in their lives. Can the teachings of the mystics still speak to us today?  The mystics themselves would say “Yes.”  Furthermore\, their message is not just for priests\, monks or nuns\, but is indeed meant for the entire people of God.  With this in mind\, during this weekend we will look at several ways that the wisdom of the Christian mystics can provide insight and inspiration for our age\, including the universal call to holiness\, St. Paul’s directive to “pray without ceasing\,” and the promise from the Psalms to “Be still and know that I am God.” \nSuggested donation for this retreat is $45. \nTo register\, please call the Monastery Guest House at 1-770-760-0959.

SUMMARY:Online Event: Dealing with Distractions During Centering Prayer
DESCRIPTION:“I’ve tried Centering Prayer\, but my mind just won’t settle down!” If you’ve ever said this\, or something like it\, then this mini-retreat is for you! We will be reflecting together on how the “monkey mind” feels like such a distraction during forms of silent prayer — and then we’ll consider how we can actually “meet the monkey” in such a way that even the noisiest thoughts can become doorways to moving deeper into prayerful silence before God. We’ll have two sessions to pray together\, learn together\, and support one another on the greatest of adventures — moving more deeply into the silence of Divine Love. \n\nSpecial note: thanks to a generous patron of the Vallombrosa Center who has underwritten some of the costs associated with this retreat\, registration is now only $25 (normally $50) per person! \nTo learn more and to register\, click on this link: Taming the Monkey Mind: Dealing with Distractions During Centering Prayer.

SUMMARY:The Franciscan Way of Prayer (Online Retreat)
DESCRIPTION:The Franciscan Way of Prayer: Spiritual Wisdom from St. Francis of Assisi\n\nSt. Francis of Assisi is one of the most beloved of all saints\, and for good reason. He’s a patron saint of animals and ecology\, and was renowned for his compassionate care for the poor. He has been an inspiration to saints and ordinary people from his own day to the present (just think of Pope Francis!) Franciscan spirituality continues to inspire people of all walks of life. But beyond the birdbaths and the famous “Canticle of the Sun” just who was Francis? Our program will begin on Friday night by exploring the story of the young man from Assisi who walked away from a comfortable life to follow God’s call; we’ll begin to explore the key themes of Franciscan spirituality\, a topic which we’ll explore further on Saturday. Between the many legends of St. Francis\, his beautiful prayers\, and the charisms of the Franciscan order\, we’ll explore ways that anyone can draw closer to God’s love through the inspiration of the great saint from Assisi. \nThis retreat will take place on Zoom. There will be three conferences (all times are Eastern time): \nFriday Evening\, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM: Getting to Know St. Francis of Assisi: An overview of St. Francis’s life and the key themes of his spirituality. \nSaturday Morning: 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM: Pray like a Franciscan: Insights into prayer from great Franciscan teachers\, from Francis and Clare to Richard Rohr and Ilia Delio. \nSaturday Afternoon: 1:30 PM – 3:00 PM: Living a Franciscan Life: How can the Spirituality of St. Francis make a difference in our lives? Here are several ideas to get us started — and/or to take us deeper. \n\nPlease provide an email address when registering so you can receive the Zoom link.\n\nFor more information or to register\, please call the Rock Hill Oratory Center for Spirituality at (803) 327-2097. SUMMARY:Online Course: Wisdom of the World's Mystical Traditions (Seven Week Program)
DESCRIPTION:Mysticism is like meditation and prayer — it cannot be limited to just one faith or wisdom tradition. Zeitgeist — Atlanta’s home base for the spiritually independent seeker (and their allies like me\, who are aligned with a faith but who love the interspiritual adventure) — is doing important work not only here in the south\, but now thanks to online technology\, for everyone. I’m really excited to partner with Zeitgeist to offer this seven week program on “Wisdom of the World’s Mystical Traditions.” Each week we will explore one of the great mystical/contemplative traditions\, and engage in a meaningful spiritual exercise designed to explore the contemplative practice of that particular lineage. People at all levels of contemplative study are welcome to participate: all we ask is that you bring an open heart\, a curious mind\, and a willingness to respect all positive spiritual paths. \nTo learn more about this program and to register\, click here:\nwww.zgatl.org/carl-mccolman-mysticism.html

SUMMARY:Online Event: Julian of Norwich - The Patron Saint of Sheltering in Place
DESCRIPTION:Julian of Norwich\, a fourteenth century mystic\, is surprisingly relevant to our time: she lived through political turmoil\, religious conflict\, and multiple outbreaks of the bubonic plague. Through it all\, she retained a spirituality powerful in its optimism\, trust\, and joy in God. She has much to teach us about the nature of Divine Love\, the dynamics of prayer\, and the beauty of life when it is grounded in the unshakable confidence that “All Shall Be Well.” Our sessions will explore who Julian was\, why her message was so radical for its time (and remains visionary even now)\, and how we can apply her joyful wisdom to our lives today. \nThis special online retreat is sponsored by the Vallombrosa Center of Menlo Park\, CA. We will gather via Zoom for two sessions on May 29 and May 30. Click here for more information or to register.

SUMMARY:Online Retreat: Praying with the English Mystics
DESCRIPTION:One of my favorite monasteries is Holy Cross Monastery in the Hudson River Valley of New York. I’ve led a number of retreats there over the years\, and so I’m very pleased to offer this retreat — via Zoom — the next best thing to being there! \nOver three days (May 12\, 13\, and 14\, 2020) we’ll have a Zoom session each day to reflect together on the wisdom of one of the great English mystics. We’ll explore the spiritual guidance from Julian of Norwich\, Evelyn Underhill\, and the anonymous author of The Cloud of Unknowing. Each session will include an introduction to the mystic we are exploring\, highlights from their teachings\, and practical insights how we can incorporate their contemplative into our daily prayer lives\, here in the 21st century. \nWe suggest a donation of $15 per session ($45 for the entire retreat) which will support the ministry of the Holy Cross monks (and my ministry as well). To make your donation\, click on the link below; please put “English mystics retreat” in the memo line of your donation. No one will be required to donate in order to join the sessions. \nMake your donation at www.holycrossmonastery.com/donate (remember to put “English Mystics Retreat” in the memo line). \n \nPRAYING WITH THE ENGLISH MYSTICS: Contemplative Wisdom for Challenging Times \nFrom the visionary optimism of Julian of Norwich\, to the contemplative guidance of The Cloud of Unknowing and the encouraging words of Evelyn Underhill\, England has been home to a rich lineage of spiritual teachers. These great mystics have shared their timeless wisdom through a treasury of poetic and inspirational writings that continue to point us to a joyful and prayerful spiritual life. \nOur time together will include three conferences where we will explore the life and teachings of the English mystics\, with an eye to applying their wisdom to our daily life. We’ll explore their practical instruction for meditation\, and contemplation\, and reflect together on how their down-to-earth methods of prayer can transform our spiritual practice today. \nPlease join us on Zoom for any or all of these three sessions\, offered at 2pm Tuesday\, Wednesday\, and Thursday\, May 12-14. Each session will last about one hour. We’ll post the link at the Holy Cross website on the week of the retreat. \nNo preregistration is required for this retreat. \n— \nRetreat leader Carl McColman is the author of several books\, including Befriending Silence\, Answering the Contemplative Call\, and The Big Book of Christian Mysticism. SUMMARY:Pray Without Ceasing: An Introduction to Christian Contemplation and Mystical Spirituality
DESCRIPTION:Could your new year’s resolution be\, “This year I want to grow spiritually?” If so\, this course — meeting six Thursday evenings from January 30 to March 5 — could help you get the year off to a great start! \nMysticism. Contemplation. Union with God. These are big concepts and it’s tempting to think that they are just for saints or other advanced souls. But the Catholic faith proclaims that prayer — and the joy of an intimate friendship with God — is for everyone. The great mystics and saints of our faith have given us many spiritual practices and wisdom to help us all grow closer to God through prayer\, meditation\, and contemplation. \nThis six week course will introduce you to some of the great Catholic mystics\, their teachings\, and their instructions for how even the most ordinary person can grow in the life of prayer and spirituality. No prior knowledge of mysticism is required\, and you do not need to be a monk or a nun — or even particularly “holy” — to attend. All that is required is a willingness to learn and to pray. \nPre-registration required. Space is limited to register early. To register\, click here (Be sure to select “More Theology: Pray without Ceasing” under “Program/Class”).

DESCRIPTION:I’ll be joining my friends Lerita Coleman Brown and Stuart Higginbotham for a special Epiphany celebration and contemplative booksigning\, which will take place at Mary & Martha’s Place on Sunday\, January 12 at 4 PM. \n\nEpiphany invites us to focus on the manifestation of God in our lives\, the work of the Spirit in our hearts.  In each and every heart\, Spirit invites a deeper awareness of God’s peace and love. In this day and age\, many are seeking to offer images and insights of how we are all called to listen deeply.\n\nWe’ll have a conversation about the contemplative life we all share\, and of course\, there will be an opportunity to purchase your books and have them signed.

SUMMARY:"Be Still and Know that I am God" Talk and Booksigning in Lecanto\, FL
DESCRIPTION:I’ve been invited to speak at the Adult Formation Hour of this vibrant Episcopal Parish on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Our topic will be “Be Still and Know that I am God” — we’ll look at the Biblical foundation for contemplative prayer and how silence\, solitude and stillness are gifts — even to the most active of individuals (or communities). We’ll have books for sale as well!
