SUMMARY:Online Event: Julian of Norwich - The Patron Saint of Sheltering in Place
DESCRIPTION:Julian of Norwich\, a fourteenth century mystic\, is surprisingly relevant to our time: she lived through political turmoil\, religious conflict\, and multiple outbreaks of the bubonic plague. Through it all\, she retained a spirituality powerful in its optimism\, trust\, and joy in God. She has much to teach us about the nature of Divine Love\, the dynamics of prayer\, and the beauty of life when it is grounded in the unshakable confidence that “All Shall Be Well.” Our sessions will explore who Julian was\, why her message was so radical for its time (and remains visionary even now)\, and how we can apply her joyful wisdom to our lives today. \nThis special online retreat is sponsored by the Vallombrosa Center of Menlo Park\, CA. We will gather via Zoom for two sessions on May 29 and May 30. Click here for more information or to register.

SUMMARY:Online Retreat: Praying with the English Mystics
DESCRIPTION:One of my favorite monasteries is Holy Cross Monastery in the Hudson River Valley of New York. I’ve led a number of retreats there over the years\, and so I’m very pleased to offer this retreat — via Zoom — the next best thing to being there! \nOver three days (May 12\, 13\, and 14\, 2020) we’ll have a Zoom session each day to reflect together on the wisdom of one of the great English mystics. We’ll explore the spiritual guidance from Julian of Norwich\, Evelyn Underhill\, and the anonymous author of The Cloud of Unknowing. Each session will include an introduction to the mystic we are exploring\, highlights from their teachings\, and practical insights how we can incorporate their contemplative into our daily prayer lives\, here in the 21st century. \nWe suggest a donation of $15 per session ($45 for the entire retreat) which will support the ministry of the Holy Cross monks (and my ministry as well). To make your donation\, click on the link below; please put “English mystics retreat” in the memo line of your donation. No one will be required to donate in order to join the sessions. \nMake your donation at www.holycrossmonastery.com/donate (remember to put “English Mystics Retreat” in the memo line). \n \nPRAYING WITH THE ENGLISH MYSTICS: Contemplative Wisdom for Challenging Times \nFrom the visionary optimism of Julian of Norwich\, to the contemplative guidance of The Cloud of Unknowing and the encouraging words of Evelyn Underhill\, England has been home to a rich lineage of spiritual teachers. These great mystics have shared their timeless wisdom through a treasury of poetic and inspirational writings that continue to point us to a joyful and prayerful spiritual life. \nOur time together will include three conferences where we will explore the life and teachings of the English mystics\, with an eye to applying their wisdom to our daily life. We’ll explore their practical instruction for meditation\, and contemplation\, and reflect together on how their down-to-earth methods of prayer can transform our spiritual practice today. \nPlease join us on Zoom for any or all of these three sessions\, offered at 2pm Tuesday\, Wednesday\, and Thursday\, May 12-14. Each session will last about one hour. We’ll post the link at the Holy Cross website on the week of the retreat. \nNo preregistration is required for this retreat. \n— \nRetreat leader Carl McColman is the author of several books\, including Befriending Silence\, Answering the Contemplative Call\, and The Big Book of Christian Mysticism. He blogs on Christian spirituality and contemplative living at www.carlmccolman.com. McColman is a life-professed Lay Cistercian (a layperson under formal spiritual guidance of Cistercian monks) affiliated with the Trappist Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers\, Georgia. He has been a practitioner of Christian contemplative prayer and meditation for over 30 years.

SUMMARY:Pray Without Ceasing: An Introduction to Christian Contemplation and Mystical Spirituality
DESCRIPTION:Could your new year’s resolution be\, “This year I want to grow spiritually?” If so\, this course — meeting six Thursday evenings from January 30 to March 5 — could help you get the year off to a great start! \nMysticism. Contemplation. Union with God. These are big concepts and it’s tempting to think that they are just for saints or other advanced souls. But the Catholic faith proclaims that prayer — and the joy of an intimate friendship with God — is for everyone. The great mystics and saints of our faith have given us many spiritual practices and wisdom to help us all grow closer to God through prayer\, meditation\, and contemplation. \nThis six week course will introduce you to some of the great Catholic mystics\, their teachings\, and their instructions for how even the most ordinary person can grow in the life of prayer and spirituality. No prior knowledge of mysticism is required\, and you do not need to be a monk or a nun — or even particularly “holy” — to attend. All that is required is a willingness to learn and to pray. \nPre-registration required. Space is limited to register early. To register\, click here (Be sure to select “More Theology: Pray without Ceasing” under “Program/Class”).

SUMMARY:Promises of the Heart Online Course
DESCRIPTION:“Follow your heart.” It’s a classic phrase of advice and encouragement\, for we know that true wisdom is not just a matter of thinking logical thoughts. It emerges most assuredly from the intuition and insight that only our hearts provide. \nBut what does it really mean to “follow your heart\,” and how can the wisdom of the heart truly make a difference in our day-to-day lives? Fortunately\, each of the world’s great spiritual traditions has much to say about the blessings of the heart — and the gifts awaiting each of us\, deep within. \nThis all-new e-course celebrates the wisdom of the heart by drawing from sources throughout the world’s mystical traditions. Great teachers the world over help us discover the promises of the heart — promises we can weave into our own spiritual practice to embody a more joyful and conscious life. \nClick here to learn more and to register!

SUMMARY:Meeting Jesus in Your Heart: Praying with St. Ignatius of Loyola (A Retreat at the Rock Hill Oratory)
DESCRIPTION:I’ll be returning to one of my favorite retreat centers to lead another overnight retreat based on the spirituality of one of our greatest saints. This year we will be praying and reflecting on the life and wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola — and the rich tradition of Ignatian spirituality\, which emphasizes finding God in all things and using the imagination as a doorway to prayer. \nSt. Ignatius of Loyola (the founder of the Society of Jesus or Jesuits) was one of the great spiritual guides in the history of the church. He developed a rich and unique approach to prayer\, combining Biblical passages with the imagination to foster a deep encounter with Christ in our hearts. \nRetreat begins Friday evening\, October 11\, with a presentation on the life and key teachings of Ignatius\, and the story of the Spiritual Exercises. On Saturday we’ll move into a deeper\, more prayerful space\, using Ignatius’s methods to seek God’s will and direction for our lives and to enjoy the beautiful gift of God’s love and grace given to us through Christ and the Spirit. . \nRooms are available for out-of-town retreatants. To learn more about this event or to register\, please call (803) 327-2097 and ask for Judy. \nDownload a PDF flyer for this event by clicking here: Meeting Jesus in Your Heart.

SUMMARY:Restoring the Spiritual Heart: A Contemplative Retreat in Asheville\, NC
DESCRIPTION:Restoring the Spiritual Heart of Christianity:  A Mini Retreat Led by Carl McColman \n“I’m spiritual but not religious.” It’s a common refrain in our time\, especially by youth and young adults. But this idea that religion and spirituality are somehow different is a recent way of seeing things. Historically\, Christianity and spirituality would have been seen as basically the same thing. So for those of us who care about Christianity — or even if we just care about spirituality — how do we bring a meaningful inner life and the path of following Jesus back together? \n \nThis weekend retreat consists of two programs: \nFriday evening (7-9 PM) Carl McColman\, author of books like The Big Book of Christian Mysticism and Answering the Contemplative Call\, will discuss how “religion” and “spirituality” came to mean two separate things\, and what steps Christians can take in our day to restore the spiritual heart of life in Christ. We’ll have plenty of time for conversation and discussion\, and maybe even a prayer exercise or two. \nSaturday morning (9:30 AM-12:30 PM) we’ll look at the practice of spirituality\, by exploring traditional Christian exercises that bring prayer\, meditation and contemplation alive: practices like Centering Prayer\, Lectio Divina\, and the Jesus Prayer (also called “the Prayer of the Heart”). This will be an experiential program\, with time for prayer\, journaling\, and personal reflection. \n\nAbout the Retreat Leader: Carl McColman is a contemplative Christian blogger\, podcaster\, and author. His books include The Big Book of Christian Mysticism\, Answering the Contemplative Call\, Befriending Silence\, and Unteachable Lessons. He is a life-professed associate of the Trappist monastery in Conyers\, GA\, and a Centering Prayer instructor. Learn more about Carl by visiting his website at www.carlmccolman.com. \nCost for the Retreat: This retreat is offered on a love-offering basis. Suggested offering is $10 for Friday night\, $25 for Saturday\, or $30 for both events. No one is turned away for inability to pay. \nTo Register: pre-registration is not required\, but we appreciate knowing how many people to expect. So please indicate you are attending on our Facebook Events page\, or if you are allergic to Facebook\, contact Carl directly to indicate you will be attending. \nLimited Lodging Available: Haw Creek Commons has a limited number of guest rooms. SUMMARY:Your Sacred Story: The Spiritual Practice of Journaling
DESCRIPTION:This online course is offered through Columbia Seminary’s Certificate Program in Spiritual Formation. \nWriting and spirituality have gone hand-in-hand from Biblical times to the present day. Keeping a journal can be an integral part of a daily prayer practice; it can be a tool for discernment and for seeking God’s will in our lives. This online course will explore journaling from a variety of perspectives including writing memoir\, writing as a form of prayer\, writing for healing and discernment\, and writing to share with others. \nStudents are asked to keep a journal as a spiritual discipline\, for the duration of the class. Each week includes topics for meditation and reflection. Students may share actual journal entries or reflections based on the week’s topics. Please note\, this is not a “Writer’s Workshop” so we will not be critiquing each other’s writing for grammar or style\, although students are encouraged to prayerfully reflect on one another’s entries and to explore the question of how the creative process of writing can be a tool for deepening our relationship with God.
