Mary Montanye
MemberMy name is Mary Montanye (pronounced to rhyme with train. The “y” and “e” are silent.) But no foul if mispronounced. I’m used to it.
I live on the central Oregon coast in the tiny, artsy, funky, gorgeous town of Yachats.
The reason I signed up for this course is that I have a great deal of respect and love for Carl’s teachings, and I have owned this book for ages. However, when I tried to read it myself I was overwhelmed and lost. I am a reader of many theological books and consider myself quite intelligent and willing to sort through difficult texts on my own, but had trouble with this one. When I learned Carl was teaching a course on this, I had no doubt I would sign up.
This isn’t really a fun fact, but my husband of forty years died of cancer after a long illness 2-½ years ago, and as everyone knows, the lockdown occurred not long after that. For the first time in my life, I was living alone and isolated. I did okay, but it was very, very difficult. Even though we haven’t completely opened up — Oregon is one of the few states that still has mandates — I feel as if I am coming into the sunshine again. Even though I come from and consider myself a Christian (Episcopalian) I have always been open to a wide variety of teachings that always seem to inform my faith. 3 years ago I even started a deep study of astrology which I also find extremely spiritual. I’m glad to be here!January 27, 2022 at 4:19 pm #27048Carl McColman
KeymasterMary, glad you are here. So sorry to hear about your loss of your husband. That had to have been surreal, moving into the pandemic so shortly after that life-changing transition.
Astrology, as you may know, goes quite well with Tarot — as does Kabbalah, the tradition of Jewish mysticism. We’ll be touching on all of the above as we make our way through this book. I think both astrology and Tarot, when approached from an archetypal (rather than “fortune-telling”) perspective, have at least as much to offer us as more “acceptable” tools like the Enneagram or the Myers-Briggs.
Yes, MOTT is difficult, but it also can be pretty generous in yielding its treasures. We’ll have fun exploring!

MemberThanks for sharing your experience, Mary. Your story is very touching, and I am glad you’re feeling the return of “sunshine.”
I have tremendous fondness for the Oregon coast. My brother went to University of Oregon for college, and we had some great trips driving the Oregon coast. I am sure that I passed through Yachats several times.

MemberHi Mary. Your hometown sounds like my kind of place. Sweet!
So sorry about your husband — and the timing. Like a forced solitary retreat into the deepest places. So glad the sun is returning.
Happy to be sharing with you!
